The #1 New York Times bestselling and undisputed King of Horror Stephen King delivers five unforgettable short stories—two of which will soon be adapted for film, and which Booklist called “raw looks at the limits of greed, revenge, and self-deception.” Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, this collection proves Stephen King a master storyteller.

“I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger…” writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up “1922,” the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

In “Big Driver”—a Lifetime movie starring Maria Bello—a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

“Fair Extension,” the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment.

In the last of the tales—made into a film starring Joan Allen and Anthony LaPaglia—an unsuspecting wife looks for batteries in the garage while her husband of twenty years is away on a business trip. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she makes a horrifying discovery—and it definitively ends “A Good Marriage.”

  • Pure Stephen King!

    From Daniferg
These short stories reminded me of the "classic" Stephen King novels (ie. Christine, Carrie, Salem's Lot, Night Shift). No unnecessary profanity, just pure dark and honest story telling! Loved it!

As the faithful reader that Steven King often writes to, I not only appreciate his talent, I have embraced the many different styles and genres that he has chosen to write in. This is the first book I have read on an electronic device, I was not excited about this at all, but it was a much better tool than I thought it would be. I must say the stories harken back to some of the darker and more bleak aspects of human nature that I have glimpsed in Steven King books of the past, books that I loved and shivered through in my teens and twenties. I am now a mature 50 year old woman and must say I was more moved and disturbed by these stories than I thought I could be. I found myself unable to sleep after reading a couple of the stories, not necessarily a good thing at this stage of my life. Atmospheric, engrossing and heartbreaking at times, this was a wonderful book, it really made me think, especially the last story as I have been married to my husband for 27 years and this one particularly freaked me out. Now I will be looking at my husband through different eyes. Thanks Steven King for showing me that I can still enjoy a good scare. I shall now try and find a sunny place as I feel kind of chilled, your faithful reader.
