Tess Durbeyfield is a poor young woman living with her peasant family. Her days are simple, caring for her parents and aspiring to a quiet and happy life. But when her beauty catches the eye of the licentious Alec Stoke-d'Urberville, he takes advantage of her trusting nature and leaves her alone and pregnant. Tess is forced to cope with a sick infant and a society that vilifies unwed mothers. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, the handsome preacher's son Angel Clare, she struggles with the damager her dark past could do to her future.

Against the rural backdrop of southern England, Thomas Hardy weaves a tale that challenges sexual morality and unjust gender standards. It is a novel far ahead of its time.

  • Tess of the d’Urbervilles

    From frsky now
Thomas Hardy wrote a classic tale of love, of love lost, of new beginnings and a tragic end which features a new beginning. It has some very tough vocabulary, and I did need a dictionary throughout. Descriptive beyond description is an understatement. Hardy has a unique way of writing that is, was or will never be duplicated. The story is long and of epic proportions, but was certainly enjoyable. Classic and what other great novels could be measured by, this story should not be passed by.

  • Great read

I wanted to read this book as it was referred to me by a friend. I did not realize the author or the story before reading it. It is the tale of unrequited love, innocence lost and moral judgment. There are some challenging passages, for which I was glad to have the ebook feature for definitions. The story is compelling.
