In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen.

For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse.

For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation.

On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I don’t think of myself as a victim. I survived.

A Stolen Life is my story—in my own words, in my own way, exactly as I remember it.

The pine cone is a symbol that represents the seed of a new beginning for me. To help facilitate new beginnings, with the support of animal-assisted therapy, the J A Y C Foundation provides support and services for the timely treatment of families recovering from abduction and the aftermath of traumatic experiences—families like my own who need to learn how to heal. In addition, the J A Y C Foundation hopes to facilitate awareness in schools about the important need to care for one another.

Our motto is “Just Ask Yourself to . . . Care!”

A portion of my proceeds from this memoir will be donated to The J A Y C Foundation Inc.

The struggles that Jaycee faced are unimaginable to the average person. And she is absolutely right she does not owe ANYTHING to the Garridos.
  • Love it.

Best book ever, so sad yet amazing how a young girl just like me can survive that traumatic effect and impact that caused in her life. Shes beautiful an for someone to do that and not cave in with in 18 years has a lot of guts. Because thats just so inconsiderate for a young girl who had and still has a family and to brain wash her into thinking things that aren't true :( gosh, Your an inspiration girl! And thats coming from a 14 year old girl. Face your fears, stay strong and life will go on!! I love your movie just as much as I love your book!

I could not put this book down. Jaycee, you did an amazing job of telling your story. I'm sure this could not have been easy for you. The world was a better place on the day you were found again. I wish you nothing but happiness in your future.

I read this book in one day and could not put it down. A phenomenal young woman who went to Hell and came back. Truly remarkable.
  • Less than I expected

    From Khlala
It feels wrong writing a negative review on such a real and devastating event, but it's impossible to do otherwise. The entire book felt like a journal that stayed very close to the surface. She just didn't get deep about her experience. It had some horrifying details that just made you want to cry, but mostly you read about all the cats she lived with. I actually just skimmed through the last hundred pages or so, hoping to read something inspirational, something life changing, but the pages only got blander and blander. Although this is a story that should be known and understood, i suggest you keep your money and not purchase this book.
